A toddler is in the hospital after a Lino Lakes man allegedly sexually and physically assaulted her while the child’s mother napped.

Sterling Robert Stewart, 29, was charged Tuesday with first-degree criminal sexual conduct, first-degree assault resulting in great bodily harm and malicious punishment of a child for his alleged conduct, according to the Anoka County District Court criminal complaint.
Stewart’s bail was set at $750,000 without conditions and $300,000 with conditions. He is being held in the Anoka County Jail.
The 21-month old child reportedly visited Stewart’s home with her mother Aug. 20. While there, her mom came down with a headache and took a two-hour nap.
When she woke, she noticed her daughter was wrapped in a blanket without her clothes on. After further examination, the woman reportedly discovered bruises on her child’s face, the complaint said.
Stewart told the woman the child had a “blowout” and needed her clothes changed, according to the complaint. He said the bruise to her face occurred when the girl fell off the couch and hit a rocking horse.
Hospital doctors later discovered bruises covering the child’s face and body consistent with a “severe assault,” the complaint said. The toddler also had bruises on her genitals, indicating she had also been sexually assaulted.
Stewart’s criminal history includes convictions for petty misdemeanor-level marijuana possession, possession of drug paraphernalia and failing to drive with due care.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 20.
