Patrons of the Como Zoo are oohing and ahhing over the zoo’s latest baby Dall, and no, that’s not a misspelling.
The little lamb, a Dall sheep (pronounced “doll”), was born Saturday to her proud parents Storm and Thunder, according to Matt Reinartz, a spokesman for the zoo.
Fittingly, she is named Rainy.
“There were thoughts of calling her lightning but she was born during a rainstorm so… rainy won out,” Reinartz said.
The snow white fur ball was up and standing within 30 minutes of her birth, but has thus far been sticking close to her mother, Reinartz said.
“She will scamper away a little bit but then run right back to her mother. The mother is fairly protective too,” Reinartz said.
The lamb joins a litter of babies that have been born at the zoo over the past year, including an orangutan, gorilla and zebra. More may be on the way, Reinartz said.
“Stay tuned for more baby news… There seems to be something in the air over here,” he said.
Dall males, or rams, are perhaps the more famous of the breed’s sexes given the massive curled horns they develop over time. Ewes also have horns but they are shorter and only slightly curved, the zoo reports.
They are native to Alaska, Canada and northern North America.
Rainy is the zoo’s third Dall sheep.
As the week stretches on, Rainy and her mother Storm have been venturing outdoors more, “so the public can get a great view of this beautiful little baby,” Reinartz added.
