A woman found dead inside her North St. Paul apartment last Friday had multiple stab wounds to her back, and her son told law enforcement he killed her, court documents say.

Police discovered Gabrielle Dearing, 46, face down inside a room in her residence on the 2000 block of Minnesota 36 after responding to a welfare check, according to search warrant applications filed in Ramsey County District Court this week. Officers found a pair of scissors covered in blood lying on a bed nearby.

Her 25-year-old son, Adeyemi Dearing Jr., was taken into custody on suspicion of her homicide shortly after when a relative called authorities to report that he’d shown up at her home.

Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension agents subsequently learned that Adeyemi Dearing was the only person who lived with his mother and that the two shared one set of keys to the apartment, according to a search warrant’s affidavit.

He had his mother’s credit card and public transit pass on him when he was later arrested, the document said.

In an interview with agents, Adeyemi Dearing initially repeatedly denied any involvement in his mother’s death, but later admitted that he killed her, the affidavit said.

When pressed for more information about what happened, he asked for an attorney and the interview ended, the affidavit said.

He was subsequently released from custody this week without being charged.

North St. Paul Police Chief Tom Lauth could not be immediately reached for comment Thursday.

Search warrant applications filed in the case this week sought hand and footprints from Adeyemi Dearing, as well as his clothing and other personal belongings in an effort to obtain a DNA sample.

He has no criminal convictions in Minnesota.
