A St. Paul man admitted to causing a crash that killed an Uber driver and injured his passenger last spring in Minneapolis, authorities say.

Emery Winford, 43, pleaded guilty Monday in Hennepin County District Court to one count of criminal vehicular homicide with a blood-alcohol content over the legal driving limit as well as a second count of criminal vehicular operation.

Winford is expected to be sentenced to about 3½ years in prison.

Abdishakur Sandiko, 48, was driving a passenger eastbound on Plymouth Avenue near Lyndale Avenue North in Minneapolis when Winford suddenly smashed into his vehicle with his Chevy Tahoe.

The impact sent the Uber driver’s vehicle into an electrical box at the southeast corner of the intersection.

A nearby driver said she saw the Tahoe “driving erratically” and well over the speed limit just before the collision took place, the Hennepin County attorney’s office reported.

Officers found the Uber driver, Sandiko, unconscious and bleeding at the scene. He died three days later of his injuries.

Sandiko’s passenger, who was in the back seat, suffered injuries to his ribs and needed five stitches to treat a wound on his leg.

Winford is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 4.
