Three of the four people charged in the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old Minnetonka High School student last fall have taken plea deals.
Over the past weeks, Christopher Rayshawn Calloway, 33, Davonte Bobo, 24, and Vincent Reanell Harris, 30, have pleaded guilty of various charges stemming from their roles in the slaying.
Samantha Burnette died in an alley in St. Paul’s Payne-Phalen neighborhood Sept. 25, 2016, after Calloway, Bobo and Harris approached the car she was sitting in and robbed and pistol-whipped Burnette’s 20-year-old sister, Brittany Rock, according to criminal complaints.
The robbery was arranged by another woman, Kalisa Chardale Smith, 29, who was a friend of Rock’s and also in the car at the time, the complaint said.
Prosecutors say Burnette was shot after she hit one of the gunmen on the head with a bottle during the robbery.
Calloway, Smith’s former boyfriend, pleaded guilty in Ramsey County District Court last week to unintentional second-degree murder and first-degree aggravated robbery in the case. He is scheduled to be sentenced in August.
Bobo pleaded guilty to the same charges in April. He will be sentenced in July.
Harris pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree aggravated robbery and will be sentenced in July.
Smith’s case is proceeding toward trial. She faces charges of second-degree murder and first-degree aggravated robbery.
Her relatives have said in the past that Smith has a mental disability and she didn’t intend for her friends to be hurt in the incident.
Her attorney, Richard Virnig, could not be reached for comment Monday.
Burnette was a junior at Minnetonka High School and lived with her grandmother in Minnetonka. She was spending the weekend with her mother and sister, who live in St. Paul, when she was shot.
She was remembered by relatives and friends as a positive, social and loving teen who enjoyed listening to music, skateboarding and hanging out with her sister and two nieces.
Smith’s next court date is May 25.
