A Blaine man accused of killing his adult son reportedly told police he “kept shooting until (he) couldn’t shoot anymore” after officers found his son lying bloodied in the street in front of the man’s home.

Joseph T. Effertz, 61, was charged Monday in Anoka County District Court with second-degree murder in the fatal shooting, which took place July 22 inside a mobile home park in the 3200 block of 89th Curve NE in Blaine, according to the criminal complaint.

It was not immediately known if Effertz had retained an attorney.

Blaine police responded to the residence about 7 a.m. on a report that a man had been shot. A dispatcher told police that one of the people who called 911 identified himself as Effertz and said he had just shot his son, the complaint said.

Police arrived to find Joshua Effertz, 38, lying in the middle of the street.

Joshua Effertz was taken by ambulance to the Hennepin County Medical Center, where he later died.

After discovering the son, police walked up to Joseph Effertz’s front door. Blood was spotted on the side of the house and near the porch, the complaint said.

Joseph Effertz eventually responded to officers’ knocks and allegedly told police the gun was in his bedroom.

After being read his Miranda rights, Joseph Effertz admitted to shooting his son multiple times after his son came into his bedroom looking for a video tape, the complaint said.

He told officers he didn’t know what tape his son was referring to and that he worried his son was under the influence, which prompted the elder Effertz to become fearful, the complaint said.

He reportedly pointed his gun at his son as he was lying in his bed. His son had his back to him at the time as he stood looking at a nearby VCR.

When his son turned around and saw the gun, Joseph Effertz said his son tried to exit the room, according to the complaint.

That’s when Joseph Effertz told police he started shooting until he “couldn’t shoot anymore,” the complaint said.

Preliminary medical reports indicate the 38-year-old was shot three to four times.

Bail was set for Joseph Effertz on Monday at $750,000. His next hearing is scheduled Aug. 22.

Joseph Effertz’s criminal record includes one conviction for driving under the influence in 1988.

Joshua Effertz’s criminal record includes convictions for fifth-degree drug possession, driving while intoxicated, obstructing the legal process with force, violating a no-contact order, fleeing a police officer, second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and criminal vehicular injury.

Joshua Effertz’s family could not be immediately reached for comment. A You Caring page found online to help raise money to help the family said the man had two daughters.

One of them, 19, appears to have started the page in hopes of covering her dad’s funeral expenses.

“I am only 19-years-old and don’t have very much money saved up for any kind of emergency that would happen, and also being the oldest daughter I’m his next of kin,” a post on the page reads. “Anything will help us out in our time of need, prayers and thoughts.”
