A man found with a gunshot wound by police after they chased him in St. Paul’s Frogtown neighborhood last weekend has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm.

Authorities say Demetrice Devon Miller shot himself in the abdomen when officers began chasing him shortly near North Victoria Street and Blair Avenue around 5 p.m. on Nov. 23.

Miller, who had an outstanding warrant out for his arrest at the time, was pulled over for rolling through a stop sign, according to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday in Ramsey County District Court.

As police gave chase, a gunshot sounded and other officers noted “shots fired” over the police radio system, the complaint said.

Police eventually found Miller with a “through and through” gunshot wound to his torso and officers provided medical assistance.

The 29-year-old St. Paul man’s injury was not life-threatening, authorities say.

An officer at the scene found two handguns near Miller, one of which had a spent round of ammunition in its chamber, charges say.

Miller reportedly told medics at the scene that police shot him, but officers denied firing their guns, the complaint said.

Body camera footage from the officer who ran after Miller also does not show officers firing any shots, charges say.

Miller’s criminal record includes six felony convictions, including three for domestic violence, making it illegal for him to have a gun.

He was charged with three counts of unlawful possession of a firewarm.

He is expected to make his first appearance on Dec. 2.
